TRAVERSE CITY — A 33-year-old Grandville man is accused of stealing a car at knifepoint Thursday evening and causing a head-on crash that seriously injured two people, according to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office.
Per a Sept. 26 news release from the sheriff’s office, deputies said the suspect approached a victim in a Garfield Township driveway around 5:47 p.m. Sept. 25, threatened the person with a large knife and stole a 2011 orange Dodge Challenger.
Soon after, dispatchers began receiving reports of the car speeding south toward Chums Corners on U.S. 31 and weaving through traffic. The vehicle made a U-turn, headed back north, crossed the centerline and struck a Chevrolet Avalanche head-on.
The Avalanche’s driver, a 68-year-old man, and a 60-year-old female passenger were taken to Munson Medical Center with serious injuries. The suspect was also transported to Munson with non-life-threatening injuries.
Deputies and detectives are investigating the crash with assistance from the Michigan State Police. Anyone with firsthand knowledge or video of the incident is asked to call the sheriff’s office detective bureau at 231-995-5012.
