Dafter Township hosts search and rescue drill with multiple agencies

DAFTER TOWNSHIP — Multiple agencies braved rain, humidity and mosquitoes during a search and rescue drill that ended with two missing people safely found

First responders from Dafter Township, Bay Mills Township, Superior Township, Soo Township and the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office gathered at the Dafter Township Fire Hall for a safety briefing before splitting into two teams.

The scenario involved two hunters who were lost and experiencing medical issues.

“We want to be prepared for all hazards,” said Austin Conway, Dafter Township fire chief and deputy sheriff. “Chippewa County Sheriff’s has a very active search and rescue team. We have drones, side-by-sides, ATVs, boats, airboats, hovercrafts. We just want to be able to exercise all the equipment and also integrate with all the local fire departments and emergency medical providers here within the community.”

After rescuing the hunters, the teams reconvened at the fire hall to review the exercise and discuss operations.
