CENTRAL LAKE — The inaugural Lakeview Adventure Poker Prix will bring cyclists together Oct. 4 for a noncompetitive ride through Northern Michigan’s scenic roads and trails while raising money for Chain of Lakes Relay For Life.
According to a Sept. 17 news release, the event features three routes — 60, 30 and 15 miles — that wind along farm and seasonal roads, two-tracks and short stretches of single track between the Chain of Lakes and Grand Traverse Bay.
Riders collect playing cards at five checkpoints along each course and a wild card at a sixth checkpoint to build a poker hand. The best hand wins, with luck — not speed — determining the winner.
Participants also must photograph multiple lakes for their cards to be entered into the competition.
A prize will be awarded for the best photo. Local businesses are sponsoring checkpoints, and riders can stop at a brewery, winery or hard cider tasting room along each route for refreshments.
The 60-mile Lakeview Legend course travels south to Bellaire and through Glacial Hills Recreation Area before reaching Fisherman’s Island State Park in Charlevoix County. Riders return to Central Lake with stops at Biers Brewery and Cellar 1914.
The Thirsty 30 offers a shorter loop around Central Lake and Ellsworth, while the Farmland 15 provides a smooth, accessible ride with views of Lake Michigan and Torch Lake.
The event starts and finishes at Thurston Park in Central Lake. Registration opens at 8 a.m., with the 60-mile ride starting at 9 a.m., the 30-mile at 10 a.m. and the 15-mile at 11 a.m.
An afterparty and prize ceremony will be held at the park on Intermediate Lake from 3 to 7 p.m. with food, drinks and live music by Northern Michigan’s Hipps-N-Ricco. Nonriders may attend with a $5 donation. All proceeds benefit Relay For Life.
