Cedar Polka Fest kicks off with classic car show

CEDAR — The Cedar Polka Fest is in town celebrating the rich polish history the community has come to be known for. And while the event is in its 43rd year, this is the way it got started decades ago, off the record.

“In 1975, some local people decided they wanted to have a polka dance, so they got some bands, but they weren’t an organized group that could apply for a liquor license. So rather than sell you beer, they sold you a mug and they filled it with free beer all weekend long. So, it was very well attended, as you can imagine,” said Cedar Polka Fest executive director Lisa Rossi-Brett.

To make the event official the Cedar Polka fest Foundation was formed. This year’s event has activities for all ages.

“So, we’ve got live poker, music, polish food, dance floors and a great band lineup,” said Rossi-Brett. “Tonight, we’ve got Digital Sticks who have some local ties, some members from Cedar and Bob Ski from New York. They’re always very popular here, their tagline is rock me some polka.”

The polka fest brings around 10,000 people to town over four days.

Cedar Tavern owner Thom Green said the event draws people to the community who otherwise may not have visited.

“it’s all about the Village of Cedar and why is it important that we help support some of these smaller villages in the community because they don’t have the big, beautiful lake right by them,” said Green. “There in these little towns in the middle and they really need the support for all the little businesses in town.”

People interested in visiting the polka fest can hitch a ride for free.

“Shuttles leave from Meijer on U.S 31 parking lot. You’ll see beta parking signs if you go there. That shuttle starts at 5PM.” said Brett. “It’s a continuous loop that just keeps going until we close down. It’s absolutely free. You don’t have to worry about drinking and driving. And probably the best part is you don’t have to wonder where to park, ”
