Road closures expected as Union and Eleventh streets undergo reconstruction in Traverse City

TRAVERSE CITY — Motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians in Traverse City should expect traffic impacts in two areas as crews continue watermain, sewer and street reconstruction work.

At Union and Eleventh streets, the city’s contractor is extending watermain work for the Eleventh Street reconstruction project. The work at the Union Street location is expected to be completed by Aug. 22, weather permitting.

During construction, the roadway and sidewalks at the intersection will be closed, and traffic will be detoured to Cass Street, with the intersection at Eleventh Street remaining open. Access to driveways and nearby side streets will be maintained when possible, though temporary restrictions may occur.

In early September, the Union and Cass street intersections at Eleventh Street will be closed at times for gravel, curb, sidewalk, paving, paint and restoration work. The full project is anticipated to be completed by Sept. 12, weather permitting.

Separately, the city’s Water and Wastewater Maintenance Division and Team Elmer’s will conduct emergency sewer system repairs in the 300 block of South Cedar Street. The work, originally set to begin Aug. 15, is now scheduled to start Aug. 18.

To complete the repairs, the 300 block of Cedar Street will be closed between Sixth and Seventh streets. Seventh Street will also be closed between Division and Spruce streets. Seventh Street is expected to reopen by the end of the day Aug. 18, with Cedar Street having limited, no-thru access through Aug. 19.

Both projects will include signage and barricades for safety. City officials caution that construction will generate dust, noise and potential inconvenience, and they thank the public for patience and cooperation.
