Mason County Sheriff taking more steps to solve 32-year-old homicide case

LUDINGTON — The Mason County Sheriff’s Office says they have new evidence in a 32-year-old cold case investigation.

Back on June 23, 1993, 15-year-old Melissa Simmons was last seen while walking to the Scottville Wesco gas station.

It was a fisherman who found her body later that day in the Pere Marquette River.

A medical examiner ruled melissa’s death a homicide.

Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole had his detectives re-open the case about two years ago.

They have found new evidence that has led them to getting it tested in Virginia.

Investigators there have now built a DNA profile.

Cole says, with all this evidence, they have exhumed Melissa’s body from a cemetery to help them in the investigation.

The sheriff says this is the first time they have ever had to dig up a body in all the years he has been there.

No suspects or arrests have been announced.

In the last two years, the sheriff’s office has interviewed hundreds of people and the investigation has even taken them out-of-state.
