Cadillac woman arrested after suspected drunk driving crash kills 3-year-old, injures two others

WELDON TOWNSHIP — A Cadillac woman was arrested Friday after a crash in Benzie County killed a child and injured two others, according to the Benzie County Sheriff’s Office.

According to an Aug. 12 news release from the sheriff’s office, Benzie Central Dispatch received a 911 call around 9 p.m. Aug. 8 reporting a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Cadillac Highway (M-115) and Weldon Road.

Deputies said 25-year-old Shaynel Guthrie failed to stop at the intersection of Kurick Road and Cadillac Highway, where her vehicle was struck by an eastbound vehicle driven by an 18-year-old Kaleva woman. The other driver was not injured.

A 3-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. A 4-year-old was taken to Munson Medical Center, treated, and released.

A 5-year-old sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids. Guthrie and her adult passenger were not injured.

Authorities said alcohol was a factor in the crash. Guthrie was arrested and lodged at the Benzie County Jail on charges of operating while intoxicated causing death, operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, and operating while intoxicated with a person under 16 in the vehicle.

Her bond was set at $500,000. The investigation is ongoing.
