Sault Ste. Marie voters pass $20.5 million bond for school upgrades

SAULT STE. MARIE — Voters in the Sault Area Public Schools district have approved a $20.5 million bond proposal, ending a string of failed millage attempts and paving the way for building and safety improvements across the district.

The no-mill increase bond passed Tuesday by a margin of 1,892 to 1,523, according to the Chippewa County Clerk. About 21% of registered voters in the district participated in the election.

The bond will fund projects such as replacing aging infrastructure, reimagining shared spaces, improving safety throughout school buildings, and upgrading areas that support student services and play areas.

“This is a great day for the students of Sault Ste. Marie and the generations to follow,” Superintendent Amy Scott-Kronemeyer said. “It’s also a great day for our community. An investment in the school is an investment in our community.”

The district’s first two proposals in recent years — a $57 million millage in 2023 and a $43 million request last November — both failed. Officials said the approved $20.5 million bond will allow for essential upgrades without increasing the current millage rate.
