TRAVERSE CITY — The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has awarded $342,000 to farm stops across the state, including four in Northern Michigan.
9 Bean Row, Coveyou Scenic Farm, Lakeview Hill Organic Farm and Lively Holdings are among the recipients of the grants, which support permanent, brick-and-mortar markets that source food directly from local farmers.
“Farmers have control of these products,” an official said. “They’re setting the prices, delivering to the farm stop frequently, and building meaningful connections with the community. Think of it as an indoor farmer’s market.”
The grants are part of an effort to strengthen Michigan’s middle-of-the-supply-chain agri-food systems and make fresh, healthy food more accessible. Projects funded include retail expansions and cold storage upgrades.
