Michigan’s OK2SAY program logs over 11,000 tips in 2024

LANSING — Michigan’s student safety tip line received a record number of submissions in 2024, according to the Michigan State Police.

The OK2SAY program, which allows students, parents, school staff and community members to confidentially report potential threats or criminal activity involving schools, logged 11,671 tips last year. That marks a 20% increase from 2023.

Tips were submitted across 25 categories, with the most common reports involving bullying, suicide, mental health concerns, drugs and sexual assault, state police said.

“It’s giving them a voice to where they’re feeling comfortable coming forward,” a program representative said. “They’re not actually coming into the police station, but they know that if they report the tip via text, mobile app or calling, it gets reported directly to school staff and then law enforcement, and every tip is investigated.”
