Dual starting points for 2025 Mackinac Bridge Walk

ST. IGNACE — The 2025 Mackinac Bridge Walk will once again begin from both ends of the bridge, with participants able to start in either St. Ignace or Mackinaw City, according to the Mackinac Bridge Authority.

The event, set for Labor Day, Sept. 1, will mark the 67th annual walk across the Mighty Mac. The dual starting points — at Bridge View Park in St. Ignace and the Jamet Street ramp in Mackinaw City — have been used since 2018 to eliminate the need for busing and to provide participants with more flexibility.

MBA Bridge Director Kim Nowack said the changes made in recent years have helped improve safety and convenience for walkers.

“These changes to the Annual Bridge Walk format we’ve made over the past several years have made it safer and easier for everyone to participate in this beloved event,” Nowack said in a statement.

The walk in St. Ignace will again begin at Bridge View Park on the west side of I-75, rather than at the MBA administration building, a change first introduced in 2024. Most walkers already park near Bridge View Park, and the adjustment reduces the number of pedestrians crossing the interstate before the walk begins.

Participants parking on the east side of I-75 will be guided across the highway before and after the event.

A video explaining the walk’s logistics and start options is available on the MBA website at www.MackinacBridge.org/Walk.

Walkers have three primary options:

• Start from either end, walk to the center, then return to their starting point. Walkers must be back on their original side before 10 a.m. to complete the walk.

• Walk the full length of the bridge, starting from either side. They must reach the midpoint before 10 a.m. or will be turned back. Walkers choosing this option must arrange their own return transportation.

• Walk across and back, returning to the side they began. Participants must cross the midpoint on their return by 10 a.m. or arrange alternate transportation.

There will be no busing provided during the event. The MBA advises participants to plan ahead and ensure they finish on the same side where their vehicle or transportation is located.

The bridge will be closed to public traffic from 6:30 a.m. to noon on Sept. 1, per recommendations from the Michigan State Police and U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Emergency vehicles will be allowed to cross during that time.

The Mackinac Bridge Walk has been held annually since 1958, except in 2020. An estimated 30,000 people participated in the 2024 event. Attendance typically ranges between 20,000 and 35,000 walkers.
