TRAVERSE CITY — Smoke from Canadian wildfires has drifted into Northern Michigan, prompting a statewide air quality advisory from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).
The advisory warns that air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups and, in some areas, unhealthy for all residents. Officials said fine particulate matter in the smoke can penetrate deep into the lungs, potentially worsening respiratory and sinus conditions.
“Most people seem to be handling this quite well,” a health official said. “Certain people with underlying lung disease or sinus disease may feel a significant impact. If you are having symptoms, you should check with your doctor, get treatment, or stay indoors in an air-conditioned environment until the situation improves.”
The alert will remain in effect until the smoke clears.
