58-year-old Amish woman killed in Gladwin County buggy crash

BUTMAN TOWNSHIP — A 58-year-old Amish woman was killed Friday afternoon when a motor vehicle struck a horse-drawn buggy in Gladwin County, authorities said.

According to an Aug. 1 news release, deputies from the Gladwin County Sheriff’s Office responded at about 2:30 p.m. to Round Lake Road, also known as F-97, south of Renas Road, for a reported personal injury crash involving a Jeep Cherokee and an Amish buggy, according to a news release.

The buggy, which was occupied by three Amish women ages 58, 25 and 17, was traveling north on Round Lake Road when it was struck from behind by a 2016 Jeep driven by a 38-year-old Butman Township woman, deputies said.

The 58-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two occupants were taken to MyMichigan Medical Center Gladwin with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The roadway was closed for several hours while Michigan State Police accident reconstructionists investigated the crash. Gladwin City Police, Gladwin Fire and Rescue, and Butman Township Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation, and reports will be forwarded to the Gladwin County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
