CHIPPEWA COUNTY — The 29th biennial Trans Superior Yacht Race starts Saturday.
It’s the world’s longest known freshwater sailboat race covering around 350 miles starting from Gros Cap Light in Whitefish Bay to Duluth, Minnesota.
Friday, captains and crew members checked supplies and equipment at Kemp Marina in Sault Ste. Marie.
Saturday at 8am, they will start going through the Soo Locks on their way for the official 1pm start at Gros Cap Light.
Ages of crew members range from the teens to the 80s with both the United States and Canada having teams.
One team, notorious, is from Toronto, Canada, just finished the Port Huron to Mackinac Island and Chicago to Mackinac Island races.
“The boat is a tough little boat and it’s received a lot of extra preparation, stiffening, and reinforcing without making it heavy. Most of it is done in carbon fiber and we do upgrades to make sure that it is tough,” said Kevin Brown, owner of Notorious.
There are 45 sailboats registered to race with a total of 275 crew members.
