Firearms expert sounds off on use of a gun to keep stabbing suspect from leaving before deputies arrived

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY — Walmart remains closed Monday and has been since the Saturday mass stabbing.

Bradford Gille is originally from Cheboygan County, but investigators say he just came to Grand Traverse County recently.

Sheriff Michael Shea said during the news conference on Sunday, that Gille was caught in the parking lot with the help of citizens like Kolakowski and another man, Derrick Perry, who had a pistol.

He said they were able to keep Gille from running and prevent him from hurting anyone else until deputies arrived three minutes later.

9 and 10 News’ Jodi Miesen spoke to attorney and NRA-certified firearms instructor Dave Bieganowski about the use of a pistol to apprehend Gille.

He said from what he saw the citizen with the gun did everything right by not using deadly force.

“If there’s no life is in danger,” Bieganowski said. At that moment, which there wasn’t. He was, didn’t shoot, and he’s not supposed to.”

Jodi Miesen: So he took the appropriate measures?

“Yes,” Bieganowski said. “He had his back up. He had the ability to. It had things going sideways on him. But no, you can’t shoot somebody to prevent an escape. Usually. Or just to apprehend somebody.

Bieganowski said he believes had someone in the store had a weapon, deadly force could have been used, possibly reducing the number of people injured and diffusing the situation immediately.

He said this incident will bring up the old debate about banning guns in public spaces where they are not allowed, giving criminals the upper hand and the good guys weaponless and powerless against attacks.
