Munson Medical Center treating 11 victims following Walmart stabbing

Six of the 11 victims reported to be in critical condition

TRAVERSE CITY — Munson Healthcare confirmed Friday evening that 11 people are being treated at Munson Medical Center following a violent stabbing attack at a Walmart store earlier in the day.

As of 8:30 p.m., five patients are in serious condition and six are listed in critical condition, according to a statement released by the hospital.

“Every single department and team at Munson Medical Center, and throughout our healthcare system, stepped up to ensure not only that the victims of this tragedy were cared for, but that all our other patients continued to receive the care that they needed as well,” the statement read.

The hospital praised the response of its staff in handling the influx of patients amid what it called tragic circumstances.

TRAVERSE CITY — Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist expressed sympathy and support Saturday following a stabbing incident in Traverse City that left 11 victims injured.

Whitmer said she is in contact with law enforcement about what she described as a “brutal act of violence” in a statement posted on social media platform X.

“I’m in touch with law enforcement about the horrible news out of Traverse City,“ Whitmer said. ”Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence. I am grateful to the first responders for their swift response to apprehend the suspect.”

Gilchrist also issued a statement on X, calling the incident a “senseless act of violence” and expressing gratitude for law enforcement officers and first responders.

“I’ve been briefed on the tragic events in Traverse City,” Gilchrist said. “My heart goes out to the victims and everyone affected by this senseless act of violence. I’m deeply thankful to the law enforcement officers and first responders who acted quickly. We are keeping the community in our thoughts as we continue to follow developments closely.”

TRAVERSE CITY — Munson Healthcare confirmed that 11 victims are being treated at Munson Medical Center following a stabbing at the Walmart on U.S. 31.

In a July 26 news release, hospital officials acknowledged an “increased volume” at the Emergency Department as a result.

Munson said it is coordinating with local emergency services and law enforcement to provide care and manage resources.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this event, and we are grateful to the first responders and law enforcement for their swift action,” the release said.

The hospital asked the public for patience and understanding as it responds to the elevated demand. Further updates will be shared when appropriate, according to the healthcare provider.

Law enforcement officials have not released additional information about the nature of the incident or the conditions of the victims as of Tuesday evening.

TRAVERSE CITY —At least 11 people were injured in a mass stabbing at the Traverse City Walmart on Crossing Circle Saturday afternoon.

According to the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Department, all victims were alive when they were transported from the scene, and three were in surgery as of 6:41 p.m.

Sheriff Michael Shea, the suspect is in custody and there is no further threat to the community. There were six male victims and five female victims.

Shea said he was unsure of when the first stabbing occurred and the Michigan State Police crime lab was en route to the scene as of 6:16 p.m.

Multiple agencies reported to the Walmart. Area roads were blocked and businesses in the area were cleared.
