Traverse City Commissioners look to next steps after city manager’s resignation

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City city commissioners are taking steps to find their next city manager after current city manager Liz Vogel’s recent resignation last Thursday.

Commissioners held a special meeting Monday night to accept the terms of separation between the city and Vogel.

Commissioners also discussed who would take her place.

City Mayor Amy Shamroe said the assistant city manager, Debbie Allen, has agreed to continue being the interim city manager for a couple more weeks until a more permanent replacement can be found.

“We will be looking at an interim who would serve very likely through the end of this year at least,” said Shamroe.

Shamroe said they are hoping to keep it internal, with city clerk Ben Marentette being discussed as a top pick for interim.

“It seemed like several people were thinking of Benjamin Marentette because he had been our top choice before. So that consensus came together pretty quickly. So that’s where we’ll start. And hopefully Mr. Marentette will consider taking the interim position and we can, kind of get business as usual going sooner than later with him in that position, knowing it, he will be there for staff and for the public for the next few months.

Shamroe said commissioners also agreed to put out an email internally, asking if there is any interest in filling the vacancy. She said keeping it internal will help maintain stability for both staff and residents. It will also not add additional costs for a candidate search by hiring internally.
