GT Mental Health Crisis and Access Center expands to 24/7 operations, adds weekday psychiatric urgent care

TRAVERSE CITY — The Grand Traverse Mental Health Crisis and Access Center is now open around the clock, providing 24/7 support for individuals experiencing mental health crises. As of Monday, the center also launched new weekday Psychiatric Urgent Care services, available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis now has access to care at The Center any hour of the day, every day of the year,” said Michael Corby, behavioral health director for the center. “This is an exciting day and a significant step forward in the mental health resources we are able to provide our community.”

Operated as a partnership between Northern Lakes Community Mental Health Authority and Munson Healthcare, the center has seen consistent growth in use since its soft launch in January. Previously open only Sunday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., the expansion marks the beginning of Phase 2 of the center’s development.

Psychiatric Urgent Care, staffed by Munson Healthcare, offers same-day support for people with acute behavioral health needs that are serious but not life-threatening. Conditions treated may include suicidal ideation, worsening depression or anxiety, significant behavioral changes, or the need for medication adjustments or short-term stabilization.

An emergency department remains the best option for those experiencing psychosis, aggressive behavior, overdose, or other medical crises. Meanwhile, individuals with stable symptoms already in care may be best served through outpatient services.

“The Center adds a much-needed component to the behavioral health continuum of care that’s been missing in our community,” said Terri Lacroix-Kelty, Munson Healthcare’s executive director of behavioral health. “We’ve seen a steady increase in the number of people utilizing the center during these initial six months and we’re excited about the impact these expanded hours and the addition of psychiatric services will have in our community.”

The Center accepts all patients and all forms of insurance. Future expansions include adult and pediatric crisis residential units, which are anticipated to open in late 2025 into 2026, pending licensing and staffing.
