Community effort fuels Traverse City’s Independence Day fireworks

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Firework show is hosted by the TC Boom Boom Club. 9&10’s Megan Huiskens spoke with them about the club and how the community makes the show happen.

“It is a 4th of July fundraising effort to make sure that we go boom on the 4th of July over west grand traverse bay,” said Kat Paye, TC Boom Boom Club Vice President. This is a completely community funded program. That is how the 4th of July fireworks happen. We have approximately a 28-minute show on July 4th, right around dusk.”

The Tc Boom Boom Club hosts a VIP party with food and beverages. It is hosted at the north end of the beer tent. All the funds from the event go back to the club.

People travel from all over to come to the National Cherry Festival, but locals also want to experience fireworks on the Fourth of July. Paye says what it means to host fireworks for everyone to enjoy.

“Oh, it’s a lot of fun,” said Paye. “We have an amazing board of directors who’ve put a lot of work year-round into creating not only that party, but those great opportunities to, of course, donate towards those fireworks and put a lot of time and effort into the soundtrack because there’s a choreographed firework as well. To some amazing music. So, we’re very fortunate to, of course, be part of that and celebrate America’s Independence Day.”

Great Lake Fireworks in is charge of they show. Paye says what goes on behind the scene.

“They are incredible,” said Paye. “They come in, they bring the barges and they will load them up. Our friends over at Discovery Pier are amazing and welcome us to load the barges that way. Team Elmer’s comes in with the cranes, so it really is a community effort. Green for Life comes in with their dumpster and gets the sand loaded. And we get all those things loaded on the barges.”
