TRAVERSE CITY — July 4th is almost here and with it brings increased law enforcement on Michigan roads.
The goal is to keep drivers safe and reduce crashes caused by impaired and distracted driving.
Michigan State Police have a stern warning for drivers this holiday.
“Do not drive impaired.”
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation from 2019 to 2023 there were more than 2,500 people killed in traffic crashes over the July 4th holiday period.
40 % of the drivers killed were under the influence. Lieutenant Ashley Miller said multiple agencies are amping up traffic patrol.
“In order to cut down on our speed violations and speed involved crashes, the Michigan State Police, is stepping up patrols on the freeways to focus on speed and impaired driving,” said Miller.
Disobeying the law will have dire consequences.
" If we do stop you when you are impaired, we are taking enforcement action," said Miller.
The state has pumped extra funds into catching speeders and drunk or high drivers.
“We have extra money set aside for troopers to work extra shifts to enforce the speed violations and impaired driving,” said Miller.
Increased patrols have had a positive impact over the years.
“We have seen a 20% decrease in speed involved crashes from 2022 to 2023,” said Miller.
And drunk or high driving doesn’t just apply to the roads and highways, Traverse City Marine Division Sheriff Ben McManus said boaters must also obey the law.
“You can responsibly enjoy alcohol on your boat, but we always encourage people to have a sober friend or somebody with them that can be in charge of the boat that is not under the influence,” said McManus.
