Attempted murder charge filed after carnival stabbing at Blue Gill Festival

UPDATE 3:06 p.m. June 27:

SAINT HELEN — A traveling carnival worker is in custody and facing an attempted murder charge after a stabbing early Thursday during the Blue Gill Festival in Saint Helen.

According to a June 27 news release, deputies began investigating the incident after a 40-year-old man arrived at a West Branch hospital in the early morning hours of June 26 with multiple stab wounds to his head and face. He was later airlifted to Hurley Medical Center in Flint for further treatment. His condition has not been released.

Authorities say the stabbing took place on the festival grounds and involved two members of the traveling carnival crew. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Jonathan Chapman, fled the scene on foot.

Law enforcement launched a search and located Chapman several hours later. He was arrested without further incident.

The Roscommon County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Chapman with assault with intent to murder and as a habitual offender, fourth offense. He was arraigned Friday in 82nd District Court.

The incident response involved multiple agencies, including the Richfield Township Department of Public Safety, Michigan State Police, MSP Aviation, Emergency Services Team, Grayling Crime Lab, Sting Narcotics and Roscommon County Central Dispatch.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

The Roscommon County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating a man wanted for questioning in connection with a stabbing in the Richfield Township area.

Jonathan Chapman, 32, was last seen in St. Helen and is considered a suspect in the case. Authorities say he may be armed and dangerous and should not be approached.

Chapman is described as a white male, last seen wearing a black hoodie and shorts. He has a chipped front tooth.
