TRAVERSE CITY — The Governmental Center at 400 Boardman Ave. closed early Monday, June 23, after an electrical malfunction disabled the building’s cooling system, causing indoor temperatures to rise beyond safe levels.
The City of Traverse City and Grand Traverse County made the joint decision to shut down the facility for the remainder of the day while the issue is assessed and repairs are underway.
With inoperable windows and critical IT systems at risk due to excessive heat, officials determined the closure was necessary to protect both staff and infrastructure.
County departments based at the Governmental Center — including the Register of Deeds, County Clerk, Treasurer’s Office and various administrative offices — will operate remotely and remain available by phone and email.
City staff are also working remotely and can be reached via email. City payments can be submitted online or dropped off at the red drop box outside the Governmental Center.
“We appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation as we work to resolve the issue and restore normal operations as soon as possible,” local officials said in a joint statement. “Our teams remain committed to serving the community, even during this temporary disruption.”
Further updates will be shared on the City of Traverse City and Grand Traverse County websites.
