SUTTONS BAY — Peninsula Housing has finalized the purchase of 9.5 acres of land from Suttons Bay Schools, marking a major step forward in the organization’s efforts to expand affordable housing options in Leelanau County.
According to a June 23 news release, the deal — completed earlier this week with funds loaned to the organization — places joint ownership of the property with the Leelanau County Land Bank. Under the agreement, the land will be leased back to the school district for three years before development begins.
“This partnership allows the land to remain off the tax rolls for now and gives us the ability to receive sole title to the property whenever we choose,” Peninsula Housing Board President Larry Mawby said in a statement.
Fundraising efforts are now underway to repay the borrowed funds. Mawby said the group will work with the village, township, county and wider community to develop the site for affordable housing once the lease period ends.
Meanwhile, construction planning is already underway for another Peninsula Housing project near Herman Community Park in Suttons Bay. The 11-acre site at the corner of Pine View and Herman Roads will become home to 40 residences, including duplexes, two-bedroom homes and rental townhouses.
Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2026, with tenants expected to move in the following year.
Peninsula Housing is also in early stages of exploring new housing initiatives in Northport and Empire.
“These projects are only possible because of the continued support of our community,” Mawby said.
