TRAVERSE CITY — As Michigan continues to endure high temperatures during an ongoing heat wave, Consumers Energy is encouraging customers to take steps to stay safe, reduce energy use and lower their summer bills.
The utility company said simple changes, such as running household appliances during cooler morning or evening hours, can help avoid peak energy costs. Setting thermostats to 78 degrees while at home, particularly between 2 and 7 p.m. on weekdays, can also reduce air conditioning expenses, the company said.
Other suggestions include:
- Join the Smart Thermostat Program: Customers can receive incentives for installing smart thermostats. Information is available at ConsumersEnergy.com/tstat.
- Use personalized tools: The “My Personalized Offerings” tool on the company’s website allows customers to receive custom energy-saving recommendations based on their household.
- Sign up for high bill alerts: Electric customers can enroll in email or text alerts when energy use spikes.
- Request payment assistance: Those struggling with bills can call 2-1-1 to be connected to nonprofit resources or find a cooling center.
