Grand Traverse County Sheriff releases report on jail lobby damage

TRAVERSE CITY — Grand Traverse County has released the final report after structural damage was found at the jail. It happened June 5 when an employee noticed the floor was buckling in the lobby. Engineers conducted several site visits between June 6 and 11.

They determined that the 60-year-old building has seen low-level movement that has impacted some doors and finishes.

Vibration monitors were also used and found the readings were below levels for concern and the sheriff’s office is watching the situation closely.

“We are dealing with a very vulnerable population, not to mention our employees as well. They don’t have the choice to decide ‘I don’t want to be in this building.’ So that is paramount in my mind to make sure that their safety and well-being is taken care of, as well as our employees and the public that comes in,” said Michael Shea, Grand Traverse County Sheriff.

Construction is still being done on the jail lobby. It will open back up when that work is done.
