Sault Ste. Marie man arraigned on meth charge following traffic stop

CHIPPEWA COUNTY — A Sault Ste. Marie man was arraigned this week on a felony drug charge and a misdemeanor traffic offense after Michigan State Police troopers arrested him during a traffic stop on June 14.

According to a June 18 news release, troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie Post pulled over a vehicle with defective equipment around 4:03 p.m. on Johnston Street near Easterday Avenue. During the stop, they identified the driver as 41-year-old Derek Gehrke and discovered he was driving without insurance and had an outstanding warrant.

Further investigation led to Gehrke’s arrest for possession of methamphetamine. He was lodged in the Chippewa County Jail.

Gehrke was arraigned June 16 in 91st District Court on one count of possession of methamphetamine and one count of operating a vehicle with no insurance. His bond was set at $5,000 with conditions. He is scheduled to return to court on June 30.

Gehrke is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
