Exceptional Riders: Horses Helping Special Needs Thrive

Exceptional Riders in Harbor Springs — At the Rising Hope Equestrian Complex in Harbor Springs, a special program offers free therapeutic riding for children and adults with special needs. Dedicated volunteers lead these sessions, teaching participants how to ride and fostering crucial self-confidence and social skills – it’s a truly impactful experience. Founded in 1983, this unique initiative relies heavily on the generosity of Rising Hope, their horses, and the commitment of volunteers.

During engaging sessions with support from sidewalkers and leaders, riders enjoy obstacle courses and explore the grounds. Each hour-long session includes about 20-30 minutes of riding, leading to remarkable progress. Volunteers have witnessed incredible moments, such as a young rider gaining significant physical strength and a nonverbal participant finding their voice.

This entirely volunteer-run organization is always seeking more helping hands for sidewalking, leading, and managing their online presence. The wonderful facility and horses create a positive environment for all involved. Discover how you can volunteer or support this vital program by visiting exceptionalridersprogram.com
