CADILLAC — The Cadillac Area Land Conservancy is working with landowners to preserve Northern Michigan’s natural beauty by offering options to protect property from future development.
The nonprofit says while landowners can sell or donate property, one of the most flexible tools is a conservation easement — a legal agreement that keeps land under private ownership while permanently limiting its development.
“As we grow, it’s important that we look at areas we want to preserve, and that also identify the areas that are best suited for development,” a conservancy representative said. “That way we serve both our growing population’s needs as well as preserve the land that makes us special here.”
The group says conservation efforts are urgent. According to the conservancy, the United States loses a piece of land the size of a football field every 30 seconds to development.
