NMC partners with Michigan Works! to expand EV program

TRAVERSE CITY — Electric vehicles continue to become a growing industry and maintenance on them requires more training than standard cars.

That’s why Northwestern Michigan College partnered with Northwest Michigan Works! to provide $120,000 in funding for the college’s automotive program.

This will help boost the EV and hybrid technician training giving around 50-75 students that education annually.

Currently NMC is the only provider of electric vehicle specific training in Northern Michigan.

“The biggest thing about EV is the fact that we’re not talking 12 volt systems that used to just tingle your fingers when you touch them,” says NMC Automotive Program Coordinator Wayne Moody. “Now we’re talking 400 to 800v. That’s actually seven times the voltage in your household current. Not only is it going to kill you, it’s going to hurt the whole time you’re dying. It’s pretty dangerous to mess with it if you don’t know what you’re doing.”

That boosted EV program will be enrolling for spring of 2026.
