MICHIGAN — 2025 marks 50 years since the tragic sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Upwards of 68 swimmers are honoring that tragedy by swimming the full length of the Fitzgerald’s intended route.
They’ll start at Whitefish Point on July 26th where the cargo ship sank and end at Belle Isle in Detroit on August 26th.
The trek will be split into 17 stages, with 4 swimmers participating in each leg of the journey. The swim is meant to raise money to preserve the Whitefish Point Lighthouse.
“That speaks to the perils that these mariners faced while building, you know, the economy hauling iron ore, hauling copper, and, and some of them paid the ultimate price,” says Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Swim Event Director Jim Dreyer. “And so 50 years is getting to be a long time, and we want to help carry on that legacy.”
And there will be a tracker during the swim to stay up to date.
