Safety tips for spring weather water sports

ELK RAPIDS — Spring water activities are in full swing and while there’s much fun to be had, those activities don’t come without the threat of danger.

For those seeking to enjoy water sports, you will want to be mindful that Northern Michigan water temperatures are still cold.

Paddle Antrim executive director Deana Jerdee said falling into unexpected cold water can cause an involuntary gasp reflex that can lead to inhaling water, increasing the risk of hypothermia.

She also said cold water can reduce swimming reflexes. You can still enjoy water sports while the water is cold, but preparation is key.

“Number one, we always recommend you wear your life jacket. Life jackets will keep you safe. It keeps you above the water with the water temperatures where they are below 70 degrees. We recommend that people wear cold water protection, whether it’s a dry suit or a wet suit or something that will insulate them and keep them warm if they end up being in the water,” said Jerdee.

Jerdee also said 26% of all water sport deaths happen during paddling activities.
