Former Calypso Mediterranean restaurant in Traverse City demolished for transformation into multifamily housing

TRAVERSE CITY — It was demolition day for the old Calypso Mediterranean restaurant on US-31 in Grand Traverse County’s East Bay Township.

Plans were approved by the township planning commission in January for 13 multifamily units to be put in built on the property.

They will be 3 stories each, with a two-car garage. This is located In East Bay Township’s beach district, with views of the bay. The property manager says once demolition is done construction on the new building can begin.

“Well, going forward, we have all the permits and approvals from the township. So, everything was approved a while ago,” Property Manager Shamil Halabu said. ”After this, you’re going to start with the underground basically laying of the sewer and the water. And after that, hopefully we’ll see the structure going up... It’s going to be like a domino of one after in construction."

There is not a set date for completion but the property manager says four units will be done by early next year.
