CHIPPEWA COUNTY — The Kinross Volunteer Fire department is looking for a new fire hall.
Their lease is up this November at their current location at Chippewa County International Airport’s general aviation terminal and they will need to move out by then. They have been housed there since the 19-90’s.
The Kinross Fire Department is asking for a $3 million bond for 20 years to build a new fire hall.
They say they need the building for the airport’s firefighter center and to house a new fire truck specifically for the airport.
Monday night, the fire department held an informational meeting to explain the plans.
Last November, voters turned down a millage request to build a new fire hall.
“If it doesn’t pass then i guess we are back to the drawing board to see what can do to get a building to house the equipment we that we have. Hopefully the community comes together so we can continue serving this township,” said Brian Bensel, Kinross Twp. Fire Chief.
The last millage failed 758 - 614 with just under one-half of registered voters going to the polls last November.
The upcoming vote is Tuesday, May 6.
