Grand Traverse Parks and Rec demolishes bridge at Civic Center

TRAVERSE CITY — The bridge on the walking track at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center has been knocked down.

The demolition is part of the parks and recreations plan for upgrades. The plan includes a new bridge and a running track.

The Parks and Recreation Department said more than 200 people use the walking track every day. Which is a year-round average. The director of Grand Traverse Parks and Recreation says the county wants to make sure community members have a safe path.

“So we did a study of this bridge back in 2022. They said that the bridge was deteriorating,” Director of Grand Traverse Parks and Recreation John Chase said. “We can see some corrosion on some of the beams and the decking underneath. It was time to make sure that came out again, to make sure we’re continuing to provide a safe environment for everybody who comes to the park.”

Right now, the walking trail is closed for pedestrians until further notice and the expected completion date for the whole project is July 25th.
