TRAVERSE CITY — Spring isn’t the only season that officially kicked off with this weather, construction season is also launching into full force.
With all those men and women at work on Michigan’s roads, the Michigan Department of Transportation and state police say safety is their number one priority.
That’s why they are encouraging people to wear orange today and spread awareness for work zone safety.
Last year, there were more than six-thousand accidents in work zones.
They say distracted driving is the main cause.
MDOT Communications Specialist James Lake, says that out of those accidents, 16 people were killed.
“The men and women that work in, our road construction work zones are our humans, too. And they all want to go home at the end of every workday, as everyone does.” Lake says, adding “So a little bit of time spent slowing down, setting aside those distractions, especially in work zones, can help make sure that happens. ”
Spl/Lt. Ashley Miller with the MSP says people can check their route for construction by visiting the MDOT website.
