Red Cross ‘Sound the Alarm’ offers smoke alarm installation

CADILLAC— The Red Cross’ annual ‘Sound the Alarm’ project will soon be underway.

The Red Cross will be in Michigan neighborhoods sharing information on the importance of smoke alarms.

The northern Michigan chapter of the Red Cross is moving its smoke installation events to Thursday, June 5.

They said smoke alarms can reduce the risk of death in a house fire by half.

But those alarms need to be maintained by checking batteries and possibly replacing old ones.

Cherry Grove Township Fire Department Lieutenant Kyle Baker said smoke alarms are crucial for any household.

“Smoke detectors are kind of your first line of defense. They give you kind of an early warning system,” said Baker. “Most fires can get going pretty quick in a couple of minutes. If you have an extra 30 seconds or so, you can get yourself and your family to safety. It’s really just the buffer for an extra little bit of time.”
