Cheboygan County updates residents on power and road conditions post-ice storm

CHEBOYGAN — Cheboygan County in Michigan is steadily recovering from the ice storm in March.

According to an April 7 news release from the Cheboygan County Office of Emergency Management, Utility companies have made significant progress over the weekend, with power restored to 66% of residents; a monumental effort given that at the peak of this severe weather event, 93% of our community was without power. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the dedicated utility workers for their tireless efforts, as they continue to work around the clock to restore electricity to the remaining households.

The Cheboygan County Road Commission is also actively working to ensure that all roads are at least two lanes wide for safe travel. Their efforts have been effective, but with the incoming snow system expected to impact our area today and tomorrow, residents are advised to travel slowly and cautiously. Roads will likely be snow-covered and slippery, so please prioritize safety when traveling.

“We would also like to share that there will be a food distribution event at Inland Lakes School, located at 4363 S. Straits Hwy, Indian River,” the release said. “The hours of operation will commence at 11 a.m., and non-perishable food and water will be available. We request that all attendees follow the rules of the distribution and be courteous to the volunteers who are working hard to assist our community.

The Salvation Army will be operating a mobile food canteen, which will be located in Cordwood Subdivision and out in Hebron Township. Please note that this is a mobile effort and there is no permanent site.

“Lastly, we want to remind everyone to exercise caution regarding downed power lines,” the release said. “Do not approach or touch any downed lines – instead, report them to the appropriate utility company. Your safety remains our top priority. Please remember to drive safely and considerately during this recovery phase.
