Events at Wexford County Civic Center could change locations amid roof repairs

CADILLAC — After high winds ripped part of the roof off of the Wexford County Civic Center, several scheduled events now hang in the balance.

“Our maintenance supervisor is working with the roofing company to get an estimate on when those repairs can be done,” said Wexford County Administrator Joe Porterfield.

As of Thursday, they don’t know when the Wexford County Civic Center will be back up and running to accommodate events that have been scheduled for the venue.

One of them is the annual governor’s breakfast next month.

“All the schools have children that come to the event, it’s just a good thing for those children to see the governor,” said Porterfield. “They listen to what she has to say and see the other leaders of our community out there supporting the things that are happening in our area.”

Porterfield said rather than cancelling events that are further away, they hope to make other arrangements through Boon Sports Management, the company that handles all of the activities at the Wex.

“I do know that Boon Sports Management is looking at other options in the city. But hopefully, we’ll have it on, and things can progress as normal,” said Porterfield.

Porterfield doesn’t know exactly how many events have been cancelled, he said that’s a question for Boon.

We reached out to Boon and haven’t heard back.

What Porterfield does know is how much the cost of the roof repair could potentially be.

“$150,000,” Porterfield said.

The center’s board still needs to sign off on the quote, which could happen at a meeting next week.
