Weight restrictions are set for North Union Street Bridge in Traverse City

TRAVERSE CITY — The North Union Street Bridge in Traverse City has new weight limit restrictions.

After a recent inspection of the bridge, it was discovered that there was corrosion on some of the steel beams.

This affects how much load capacity can cross the bridge. The bridge weight restrictions will be posted on both ends of the bridge by truck type.

The restrictions are as follows:

  • 1-unit truck (e.g., concrete truck) – Maximum allowable weight: 31 tons,
  • 2-unit truck (e.g., semi-trailer truck) – Maximum allowable weight: 32 tons
  • 3-unit truck (e.g., semi-trailer truck with an additional trailer) – Maximum allowable weight: 41 tons

The city is currently working on funding for the project and the bridge will not be repaired until the money is secured.
