Traverse City Arts Commission names 13 finalists for inaugural Mural Festival

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Arts Commission has selected 13 finalists from over 100 applicants ahead of the Inaugural Mural Festival.

According to a Feb. 26 news release, the Mural Festival is one of the Commission’s most successful Request for Qualifications to date, attracting artists not only across Michigan but from across the country and internationally.

Commissioners will select up to seven of these artists to participate in the Mural Festival at their March 19 meeting, where they look forward to more public participation leading up to the festival.

“We really want to engage the community and see them more involved with the Arts Commission’s work,” TCAC Vice Chair Chelsie Niemi said. “The Mural Festival is an opportunity for the entire community to be included in public art.”

Scheduled for Sept. 12-17, the Mural Festival invites the community to watch murals inspired by the North Boardman (NOBO) district created in real time on participating businesses in the Eighth Street Corridor. The festival will also hold supporting events throughout the festival to engage artists, community members, and visitors in thoughtful dialogue.
