Cadillac on the verge of getting a new mayor

Cadillac will soon be picking their new ceremonial leader, after the former mayor abruptly resigned earlier this month.

Carla Filkins resigned unexpectedly back on Feb. 12, citing personal reasons in her resignation letter to fellow council members.

The city council has been taking a lot of heat for several issues in recent months, including the city manager’s evaluation, short term rentals, and the developing PFAS situation in the Industrial Park area.

City manager Marcus Peccia said the deadline to apply ended at 5 p.m. on Thursday. He said they had four people apply, including the mayor pro Tem Tiya Schippers, who is also a current member of the city council.

The council has just 30 days from the time the mayor resigns to appoint the new mayor. They will be voting on their choice at the next city council meeting on Monday.

“We got a lot of stuff going on. We got a lot of business to take care of. And a lot of good things happening. And there’s also challenging things happening. And you know, we all need to be able to work together and continue to progress our community,” said Peccia.

The city manager said the new mayor could be sworn in that same night by the clerk.

Peccia said the term for mayor ends at the end of this calendar year. He said they will be holding a regular election in November to fill the role permanently.
