MONTCALM COUNTY - On Tuesday, Feb. 25, around 7:48 p.m., the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Derby Road and Holland Lake Road in Sidney Township for the report of a two-vehicle crash with injuries.
The investigation found that a 2018 Kia Sportage was traveling north on Derby Road while a 2016 Chevy Silverado was traveling south, approaching one another, when the Silverado crossed the centerline, deputies said. The Sportage took evasive action by swerving to the left to attempt to avoid the collision, deputies said. The two vehicles then struck one another head-on in the southbound lane of travel.
The driver of the Sportage, a 23-year-old man from Richmond Hill, New York, was taken by ambulance to Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital for his injuries, deputies said. The driver of the Silverado, a 45-year-old man from Sidney, fled the scene on foot prior to deputies’ arrival, and efforts to locate him were unsuccessful, deputies said. He did report to the sheriff’s office the morning of Feb. 26 and is cooperating with officials, deputies said.
The crash remains under investigation.
Derby Road between Holland Lake Road and Sidney Road was closed for approximately 2 ½ hours during the investigation.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Montcalm County Central Dispatch, Ionia County Sheriff’s Office, Montcalm County Emergency Services, Greenville Department of Public Safety and Stanton Police Department.
