SAULT STE. MARIE - After two weeks of Sault Area Middle School being closed due to a partial roof collapse, there is some good news for students and parents after a special school board meeting Thursday night.
In the early morning hours on February 8, the partial collapse caused a water line to break, releasing water into a part of the school, flooding 20,000 square feet, including the gym floor.
After two days off with no classes, school leaders went to remote learning for the students for the following eight days.
Thursday night, the community got good news that the building has been cleared to resume classes Monday, February 24.
Superintendent Amy Scott-Kronemeyer said it took a lot of people to get the school ready to re-open, “No matter who was at our table had the same goal in mind and that was to insure the safety of our staff and students. As long as we kept that at the center of the focus, we knew that everyone was pulling in that direction and that made it easier.”
Scott-Kronemeyer did emphasize that parts of the roof must be brought up to new building codes this summer before students can return in the fall.
