Sault Area Middle School will remain closed after partial roof collapse

Parents can pick up computers Tuesday and Wednesday for distance learning

UPDATE 2/11/25

Out of an abundance of caution, Sault Area Middle School will move to distance learning for approximately two weeks starting Feb. 12, officials said Tuesday.

School officials said that “until we have clearance from the Bureau of Construction Code and Bureau of Fire Services, we need to remain out of the school facility.”

SAULT STE. MARIE - Sault Area Middle School in Sault Ste. Marie was closed Monday and will be closed for at least one more day due to a partial roof collapse Friday night, officials said Monday.

Sault Area Public Schools Supt. Amy Scott-Kronemeyer said a portion of the roof collapsed into a classroom next to the gym, causing a water line to break and flood more than 20,000 square feet of flooring, including the gym floor.

A school employee noticed the flooding when they arrived Saturday morning to get the gym ready for basketball games.

Scott-Kronemeyer said no fire alarms went off because the steam from the pipe escaped through the hole in the roof.

Crews have been working to clean up the damage with contractors rebuilding the areas that were destroyed.

There will be a meeting Tuesday at noon with all those involved in the cleanup effort to ensure they can open Tuesday, Scott-Kronemeyer said.

“We need to verify that it is safe for our students to return to this space,” Scott-Kronemeyer said. “Also to make sure all of our alarm systems, just as fire alarms and such, are all in working condition to make sure we are approved for occupancy.”

When school does reopen, recess will be held outside until the repairs are complete, so school officials urge parents to have their children dress for the weather.
