BIG RAPIDS - Black History Month is in full swing and Ferris State University is celebrating with a host of activities to commemorate the month through the end of February.
FSU has eight activities lined up for Black History Month. The events range from keynote speakers to art exhibits chronicling black history, to jazz performances.
Ferris State’s director of multicultural student services, Christopher Sanders, said students have worked on putting together the events for months to provide opportunities for education, reflection, and fun splashed throughout.
When asked why he thinks these activities are important, he said it’s all about establishing a sense of community at the school. “I think mostly just a sense of belonging to Ferris State and seeing people who look like them and just community building,” said Sanders. “I think the biggest part of holding these events is validating students right to be here in the community, and honestly, just to have some fun too.”
