Kingsley Area Schools will ask for a nearly $40 million bond

Kingsley Area Schools will be taking it to the voters this coming spring, asking voters for a $39.2 million bond for improvements and renovations.

Kingsley superintendent Josh Rothwell said, if approved, the money would also go for a much-needed expansion.

“It is a significant ask to get to 4.07 mills, but we feel like we’re doing what’s best for our kids,” said Rothwell.

The existing elementary school would become the new lower elementary for Pre-K through 2nd.

The existing middle school would become the new upper elementary for grades 3rd through 5th and a new middle school would be added to the high school building.

The money would be also used to add new entry doors and safety vestibules to the front entrances of the elementary and high school buildings for added security.

The bond would last for 30 years, costing a homeowner $490 a year for every $100,000 of taxable value.

It will be on the May 6th ballot. Their last school bond fell off in 2019, after their bond proposal failed that same year.

“We have a preschool building that has four classrooms, that are the portables, that are beyond its useful life. We’re trying to get those preschoolers out of our lower elementary school, the pre-K one. Our current elementary school and middle school are extremely overcrowded. There’s kids everywhere. We have them in janitor custodial closets. We have them in work rooms and different areas, but it’s definitely overcrowded,” said Rothwell.

Rothwell said they are making an effort to get the information out there.

They plan to have several informational meetings at the high school with the first one happening Tuesday night, January 4th at 6 pm in the library.
