The city of Sault Ste Marie must now show its complete and unredacted use of force policy for its police department.
The Michigan Supreme Court has decided not to pick up the case, denying the city’s motion to appeal the Michigan Appeals Court decision to release its policy in its entirety. The state’s highest court said in its ruling that it was not persuaded that the question presented should be reviewed by the court.
The fight over accessibility started in the summer of 2020, during the time of the protests after the death of George Floyd.
Soon after a Sault Ste Marie woman filed a request to see the police department’s use of force policy. The city handed over a redacted document, and a lawsuit was filed for the complete report.
The city then decided to take the case to the State Supreme Court citing safety concerns for not wanting to release their complete policies.
