Snowmobilers compete in time trials ahead of Saturday’s I-500 race

SAULT STE. MARIE — Snowmobilers completed the first day of time trial at the 56th running of the I-500 endurance race.

At 500 laps around a one mile track of ice, with sled speeds well over 100 mph at times, the I-500 is considered to be the most grueling and prestigious snowmobile race in the world.

One of four qualifying rounds took place Wednesday afternoon, with 42 racers competing. That number is expected to drop to around 38. Round two is Wednesday evening, and the final two rounds are Thursday.
