Crews battle fires at two buildings in Sault Ste. Marie

Several departments battled fires at two buildings next to each other in Sault Ste. Marie.

The call came in around 6pm Wednesday. According to witnesses, a building housing five apartments on the corner of Helen St. and Leroy St. caught fire first, then caught the house next door on fire.

Sault City Fire called in Soo Township, Bay Mills Township and Dafter Township to help battle the flames.

“There are going to be a lot of people that are going to have to be housed tonight because they had to take the power out on the block so they won’t have any heat. It’s nice to have the city rally and help out,” said Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Don Gerrie.

There is no official word whether anyone was home in any of the five apartments, however Don Gerrie, who is landlord of the second house, which also is a rental, says nobody was home.

The fire has affected the entire neighborhood.

The power was cut so fire trucks could use the aerial ladder without concern of shock from power lines.
