MANISTEE — Built in 1927, the Manistee North Pierhead Lighthouse still provides mariners guidance on Lake Michigan. However, it’s in need of some repairs.
The City of Manistee owns the structure, but just last week the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association signed an agreement to manage it. Now, the SPLKA says they plan to renovate the lighthouse and open it to the public.
“We need to add in power supply. We’ll be adding solar panels and a battery backup out there, adding additional handrail for safety for going up and down the ladder-style system to get up to the top of the tower, repainting the interior of the lighthouse as well,” said Jack Greve, SPLKA executive director.
The public is expected to gain access in the summer 2026, with tower climbs to the top and a gift shop.
The SPLKA’s agreement with Manistee is so new that they haven’t had a chance to update their website, but you can find more information about their mission and the other lighthouses they manage here.
